BERN
Let`s walk together along the most central streets of Bern. We start our stroll from the main station and head towards the bear park.
Visitors to Bern can see bears everywhere; on the city’s coat of arms, on water fountains, rubbish bins and you can even catch a glimpse of live Pyrenean brown bears on the banks of the river Aare at the Bear Park.
Legend has it that Bern’s love affair with bears started with a good old fashioned aristocratic hunt. Back in the 12th century, Berchtold V, the Duke of Zähringen and founder of Bern, decided that he was going to go catch himself some game. On a whim it seems he decided to name the city after the first animal that fell at his feet. As you have now no doubt guessed, that animal was a bear.
In 1857, 12 bears were kept in a 3.5 metre pit, the Bärenplatz, which can still be seen today with live bears inside. Since those days however, Bern’s bears can also move out of their drab pits through a tunnel to the nearby Bear Park along the banks of the river Aare, which was built to offer more of a natural life for the captive bears.
The Bernese bears are at home in the BearPark in the middle of the city. The “Mutzen” live exclusively in the park on the slopes of the River Aare, with a view of Bern’s UNESCO-listed Old Town. The 5,000 square metre area stretches from the former bear pit down to the banks of the Aare and can be experienced without any obstacles. This is because the “BäreBähnli” creates a fast wheelchair-friendly connection between the banks of the Aare and the upper part of the park. The panoramic inclined lift can be used free of charge. It’s a unique experience to glide through the park past the bears’ noses!
Björk, Finn and Ursina are beginning to appear outsider. They explore the area, eat some grass, sniff at each other or are playing together.
We will move through the Old city.
Founded in the 12th century on a hill site surrounded by the Aare River, Berne developed over the centuries in line with a an exceptionally coherent planning concept. The buildings in the Old City, dating from a variety of periods, include 15th-century arcades and 16th-century fountains. Most of the medieval town was restored in the 18th century but it has retained its original character.
The Old City of Berne, federal city of Switzerland and capital of the canton of Berne, is located on the Swiss plateau between the Jura and the Alps. Founded in the 12th century according to an innovative foundation plan, and located on a hill surrounded by the River Aar, Berne has experienced an expansion in several stages since its foundation. This development remains visible in its urban structure, mainly tributary to the medieval establishment and its clearly defined elements: well-defined wide streets, used for the market, a regular division of built sections, subdivided into narrow and deep parcels, an advanced infrastructure for water transportation, impressive buildings for the most part dating from the 18th century mainly built from sandy limestone, with their system of arcades and the facades of the houses supported by arches. Public buildings for secular and religious authorities were always located at the periphery, a principle also respected in the 19th century during the construction of the large public monuments confirming the function of Berne as the federal city from 1848.
Let`s see how unusual this beautiful city is!
